Heart Examination Before God

Week 1 – Day 1

Heart Examination Before God

Story

James was the person everyone went to for answers. At work, at church, even in his extended family, he was “the responsible one.” When a major ministry decision came up, he took charge, created a plan, and shared it with confidence. A few days later, after a meeting where other leaders had pushed back on his ideas, James was deflated and hurt when a friend gently asked, “Did you ever really ask God what He wanted, or did you just assume your way was best?”

That night, unable to sleep, James prayed and realized that he rarely stopped to examine his motives and often charged ahead as if everyone were on board, without asking for other people’s thoughts. He realized that he did this with his wife and children as well. He was serving, but often to feel needed, competent, or, as much as he hated to admit it, admired. As he thought about this, it was both painful and strangely relieving, and for the first time, he asked God to show him not just what to do, but why he was doing it. This heart-check became the beginning of a new freedom. Old habits die hard, and it took time — we’re all a work in progress — but he made a start.

Scripture

“Search me, God, and know my heart.
Try me, and know my thoughts.
See if there is any wicked way in me,
and lead me in the everlasting way.” (Psalm 139:23–24)

Application

Humility begins when self-deception ends. The first step is to ask God to shine His light on what is really motivating you. It might be uncomfortable, but it’s the beginning of change. This isn’t about fixing everything; it’s about being open with God, who already knows and loves you. You can’t hide anything from a God who knows you better than you know yourself — He won’t be shocked, I promise.

Instead of rushing ahead into decisions, pause long enough to ask, “Why am I doing this?” and take this to the only One who can purify your motives. When you invite His searching, you won’t be inviting condemnation or harsh criticism; you are inviting guidance into “the everlasting way.”

Daily Challenge

Begin with David’s prayer: “Search me, God, and know my heart… lead me in the everlasting way” (Psalm 139:23–24). Before any decision today, pause and ask, “What am I trying to prove?” Write your answers down and bring them to God.

Prayer: Lord, shine Your light on my motives, and give me grace to face what You reveal. Amen.
